Sports Interaction betting analyst Frank Doyle takes a look at some interesting betting opportunities in Week 1 of the NFL’s Preseason.

Preseason isn’t normally the most attractive time to bet but after the months of labor unrest just to see the teams run out this weekend is something of a treat. And a relief, it has to be said. It’d be a long and cold winter without football.

Most preseason lines are set with the home team as a three point favorite and a low total, but there are some games that are a little off that standard this week and there might be money to be made.

The first on the list is on Thursday, when New England is a four point home favorite against Jacksonville. The word is that Jacksonville will start rookie Blaine Gabbert instead of veteran David Garrard and that immediately puts the Jags at a disadvantage. Add in the fact that the Patriots have signed two high profile players, Chad Ochocinco and Albert Haynesworth, who are surely eager to repay Bill Bellichick’s leap of faith and four looks an easy number to cover for the Pats.

Detroit is a -4.5 home favorite against Cincinnati on Friday. Detroit is a good dark horse bet to do well this year - +500 to win the NFC North, +105 to win more than eight games ?and when you’re a team with the Lions?miserable history, you want to start well in preseason.

Matthew Stafford is healthy and could do with the reps, while Carson Palmer’s retirement means that Andy Dalton is now top of the Bengals?quarterback depth chart, ahead of Bruce Gradkowski. That might be difficult for the Bengals. Detroit -4.5 is the pick.

Also on Friday, it’s pick’em when Pittsburgh visits Washington. Washington normally makes splashy trades in the offseason and then watches things fall apart. Now it looks like things are going to fall apart without the added cost of those splashy trades, which is progress. Of a sort, anyway. Pittsburgh wins this one easy.

St Louis is a seven point underdog at St Louis on Saturday, which is the biggest number on the weekend board. Peyton Manning is recovering from neck surgery, which means Curtis Painter is likely to start at the Edward James Dome. He will not match up well against the Rams?Sam Bradford, who did so well in his rookie season last year.

But then, what’s in it for the Rams to keep Bradford in there? There is nothing in this game for St Louis ?there certainly isn’t seven points?superiority. Indianapolis to cover seven is the final pick of the first NFL preseason weekend.
