i find all these way too horrid and generic to ever use. I started making an improved version of sportsbettingdime website over the last month for a SB site, as I think it is possibly the best SB site I have seen.
i am copying some bits of their layout and making it better - that is all. Just a little 'standing on the shoulders of giants'. I am not stealing any visual elements or IP - I have a graphic designer making everything fresh. I just think their layout and site architecture are ACE [since we were talking about sportsbook WP themes/templates] and oddsshark.com are pretty tasty and set the bar high in terms of design and functionaliy. I hear what you are saying of course. I built my own menus, widgets, content, branding, internals, js, php, etc etc .. just no need to start from scratch when you have an amazing site to use as a starting reference point -especially when you know they have CRO'd the **** out of it, and the testing which reseulted in these layouts (over millions of pageviews/visits) probably informed these layouts which are no doubt quite optimal for converting clicks .
As an aside, I have seen plenty of bet365 style website clones without much eyebrows raised. !
- pablo picasso once said 'good artists copy, great artists steal'. I am just a big fan of not trying to reinvent the wheel as much as possible!
ah yes i guess that makes sense- sorry .
I would have imagined that you can login to the dashboard of the demo theme, or at least see some screenshots of how things work under the hood. [i see many of the themes on codecanyon and themeforest let you do this]
i bet if you contact the author directly they will give you screenshots to show you how things work.
another road to glory => maybe they have a refund policy on the theme if it's not to your expectation.
the other avenue => find it online and try it out (I found a version of the theme in google serps with little effort.. - but would be cautious as it may be laden with malware as many of these things are) - if you like it, buy it.

Good idea! I can try to reach out to the developer and se if they have a demo of the backend to. At the same time I can ask if they have a refund policy.
I don't like the other avenue, it's to risky as you say and you don't know if anything have been changed in the core files.
I'm going to go against what most people said here and recommend you go with a highly customizable theme that actually helps you achieve your goals.
No theme in the world generates the unique content that, at the end of the day, will help you outrank everybody else on this forum (hint hint). Don't go for the easiest option. Go for the best. Look for a theme that is built with performance and customizability in mind.
It's trivial effort to find an inexpensive wordpress/php developer to update your site and theme outside the bounds of what WP offers. You want fancy tables? It's like $30. You want fancy sidebars? $30 again!
Go with a theme that has been updated and improved for years. It's very bare bones and you'll have to invest much more effort, but your site will be truly YOURS. According to your vision and what you think your users need most. THAT is what will make you outrank your competitors. Not copying them endlessly.
Anything else is a complete waste of time and the very reason why people have 10 sites with only 1k monthly traffic each.
Treat this like a real business, nurture and invest into your site and you'll see success. Go for the easy option and, well, you'll be left with what "get rich quick" folks always get.
100% agree, there is no "one size fits all", and 100% granular control of every aspect of a website is essential.. built it yourself to your own spec and with your own code + chosen libraries, and you know how everything works and can ensure it meets best practices / is well optimized.
plus, why settle for less - you're worth it, right?
