Exclamation Australia - How ridiculous is this?

This was in the press this morning:

My thoughts - Why on earth spend **** loads on advertising to warn people about the risks of problem gambling when you can earn **** loads from legalising it and subsequently using that money (as opposed to the public's tax money) warning people about it?

Either use gamblers money to help them direct, or rip off the public even more (many whom don't gamble) - which one is better?

Legalise online gambling - earn millions from the tax, make online gambling safer, and use the money generated to help problem gamblers. Why spend all this money on advertising with the PUBLIC's money when the government could get it from the casinos direct by legalising it?

    ----

MORE eastern suburbs residents are seeking help for online gambling problems as the State Government launches Australia’s first advertising campaign warning of its dangers.

Gambler’s Help Eastern community development worker Yath Yoeun said the service had seen a “steady increase?in the number of people, particularly young men, who sought help for online gambling problems. “Online gambling is starting to become a problem, particularly for young people, because of their familiarity with technology and because online gambling is so accessible,?Mr Yoeun said.

The State Government’s new campaign, launched on September 15, features television, press, online, radio, train and tram advertising that shows how money, careers and relationships can be jeopardised by excessive online gambling.

Gaming Minister Michael O’Brien said it was the first action of its type by a government in Australia. He said the government was committed to reducing problem gambling.

You know what people are like. They only really care about what they are doing with money if it's theirs.

Completely agree with you David, that's exactly what should be happening. It would be a win-win situation for the government, its citizens (more tax money for the community), as well as online gamblers who have no legal protection.

David we are also the country an insane amount of signs and advertising warning about the risks of this and that. Go for a drive one day, and check out the number of signs. Nanny state.

Anyhow.. I completely agree with your post. I made a post about this in another thread before... but what seems like the most obvious of solutions, and ideas seem to by pass politicians.
